History of Grove Hill Baptist Church

Grove Hill Baptist Church was organized in 1861 by “circuit rider” preachers, going from community to community. The first church was a small while frame structure with a bell tower and stained glass windows, near the present location. A beautiful oak grove surrounded the church.

In 1924, a brick edifice was erected, with an educational annex added in 1951. In 1963, another education unit was constructed and was later named for the pastor of twenty-two years, Rev. Charles Granade.

The church and first annex burned January 9, 1996. The present building was dedicated April 19, 1998. The original bell from the first church is now in the present bell tower.

Sunday School, Discipleship Training, Women on Missions, Brotherhood, Senior Adult Fellowship, and Music programs are on-going ministries of the church.

What We Believe
1.  The Scriptures:
  We believe that the entire Bible, all 66 books are inspired by God and inerrant in the original writings. Through the providence of God, the Word of God has been protected and preserved, and is the only infallible and authoritative rule of faith and practice. -2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21;

2.  God:
We believe there is only One true, eternally existent God. He exists in three co-equal persons -Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  The triune God is the Creator and Sustainer of all things, and is worthy of worship and obedience. – Deut. 6:4-5; Genesis 1:31, Luke 3:21-22; Matthew 28:18-20, Rev. 4:11

3.  Jesus Christ:
We believe that Jesus Christ is God.  He was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, performed miracles, shed His blood on the cross to pay the debt for our sins, was buried, bodily resurrected, ascended to the right hand of the Father, and will return literally, visibly, and personally in glory and power. -John 1:1-3, 14; Matthew 1:18-25; Philippians 2:5-9; Colossians 1:15; 1Corinthians 15:1-8; Acts 1:11.

4.  Holy Spirit:
We believe that the Holy Spirit is God, Co-equal and Co-existent with the Father and the Son.  He is the Chief Convictor of sin and the Chief Agent of regeneration and sanctification.  The Holy Spirit lives within every believer and empowers every believer to live a godly life. -John14:16-19;16:7-15; 1 Corinthians 6:19-20; Romans 8:9,11; Titus 3:5

5. Salvation:
We believe salvation is a free gift of God’s grace apart from human works, based soley upon Christ’s atoning death, received only through faith in the person and finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross and His resurrection from death. – Ephesians 2:8-10; 2 Corinthians 5:21

6.  The Church:
We believe the church is the body of Christ and family of God.  It is made up of saved and baptized believers, who regularly join together for worship, fellowship, and ministry. – Matthew 16:18; 1 Cor. 12:12-14; Hebrews 10:25.

7.  Evangelism:
We believe that it is the responsibility and privilege of every Christian to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ and to seek to make growing disciples. – Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 1:8

A Practical Guide to ESTATE PLANNING from a Christian Perspective

The purpose of this seminar is to provide you with practical information that will help you understand the basic concepts related to estate planning, point out some common pitfalls and encourage you to consider estate planning as an act of stewardship. When we hear the term “estate planning,” we tend to think it only applies to the rich.  However, we all have an estate, and at last report, the death rate remains at 100 percent! We will not take any of our stuff with us to the grave.
The Bible clearly teaches God owns everything and we are called to be His managers or stewards. See, for example, Psalm 24:1; Matthew 25:21: Luke 16:2. Appropriate estate planning is beneficial to almost everyone. Whether we are nearing the end of our lives, contemplating retirement, or younger with a growing family, estate planning boils down to determining how, when and to whom we will transfer the stewardship of what God has entrusted to us when we can no longer serve as stewards ourselves. However, every year, the majority of Alabamians who die do so without having prepared a thoughtful estate plan. This statistic is astounding since state and federal law provide significant incentives to prepare an estate plan. Let us help you NOT be a part of that statistic.

Seminar will be held in Fellowship Hall

Listed below are some terms we will be discussing at the seminar.

Durable Power of Attorney: A legal document that authorizes one person to act on behalf of another person. The term “durable” is very important because that signifies that the power to act survives the grantor’s disability. (If a power of     attorney is not made “durable” then its authority ceases when the grantor has a disability that prevents him from acting on his own behalf.) A general power of attorney authorizes another person to act on your behalf to perform any act you could do for yourself. It is of extreme importance that you fully trust the person you designate as your power of attorney.

Living Will: A legal document that a person uses to make known his or her wishes regarding a life prolonging medical treatments. Generally, a living will describes certain life prolonging treatments.

Health Care Power of Attorney: A special power of attorney that authorizes someone to make healthcare decisions for you when you are unable to make them for yourself. It can be combined with a general durable power of attorney. However, it is most often combined with a living will and the document referred to as an Advanced Directive for Health Care.

Will: The will is the most basic part of every estate plan. By definition, it is a legal declaration of a person’s wishes regarding the disposal and distribution of his or her estate after death. The will is the legal document drafted during your lifetime that addresses numerous issues:

¨      Final testimony of your Christian faith

¨      Asset distribution

¨      Naming an executor and trustee

¨      Naming a legal guardian for minors

¨      Reducing estate tax liability
